The Impacts of Enterprise
Hi Everyone
I’m writing this while Returning from Newport delivering my class on the EEW Enterprise Educators Qualification: ‘The Impacts of Enterprise’ I was reflecting on my delivery; I think the session was OK…the economics quiz I created worked well and shocked a few people…showing how dependant the UK is on small entrepreneurial companies, but the interactive workshop was a bit doom and gloomy and never got going, I need to work on creating a few more high points!
So I had an idea…how awesome would it be to show new teachers how enterprise education is changing lives using real examples from across my network!
Hence I am going to ask you all for a favour… Can you please share, via the comments on this blog, your favourite example of how enterprise education has changed the lives of one of your students for the better; it could be starting a business, helping out a community, improving their opportunities or getting them a killer job…anything I just want to collect five or six stories with some positivity and feeling…links to other sites are also greatly accepted!
If you share something I promise that I will make the final resources I create open for you…or anyone else (if you don’t mind) to use!
Thanks in advance…this is going to Crush It!
Matt
I was a student on a recent entrepreneurial module as part of a Master of Clinical Research degree at the University of Lincoln.
The module has completely changed the way I view my work. I am NHS employed, not self employed but the module has built my confidence and enabled me to realise that being a ‘Nurse Entrepreneur’ is possible within a large organisation.
I have always had an interest in new technology for personal uses but the module has given me the confidence to use the technology in my working life, which I would not have done before.
I have embraced Twitter as a result of the module, which has led me on to make connections with Drs,Nurses & other health professionals from all over the world.
I have also recently gained new employment which I believe can be attributed considerably to the entrepreneurial learning/teaching that I was party to.
Hi Matt,
I have several very positive stories I could tell you about BSc Business Enterprise (BBE) graduates from the University of Buckingham, but as requested, here is one.
In leaving school, Tom was working for Tesco, but decided to study BBE at Buckingham. He developed a photography business as an integral part of his honours degree and achieved a 2.1 along with a university prize.
Great, you would say, however Tom completed his degree in December 2008 & graduated in Feb 2009, just as the financial crash occurred!!
One of the important points Tom learned on the BBE programme was a “can do” entrepreneurial approach. He then used his photography and written skills to prepare an A5 flyer as his CV.
The result? More than 10 employers called him having seen his flyer and he had 6 interviews, when everyone said “There are no jobs.”
Tom passed two interviews with a family brewery and for 18 months he was a on a Graduate Training programme, before becoming the company’s “Beer Development Manager”.
Is this positive enough for you?
With Tom’s agreement, I can provide more details if you want them.
Best regards,
Nigel

Thanks for that Nigel, its a great vignette, just what I’m looking for! Kay brilliant personal story, thanks for sharing
Hi Matt,
If you have time, please have a look at our BBE webpage (www.Buckingham.ac.uk/business/BBE) & links from that page. You will find info about BBE graduates.
Best regards,
Nigel

Here’s one of ours. http://bit.ly/ktADw9 Thought about start-up after an embedded course. Graduated in 2008:
ENTERPRISING graduates will provide a boost to Yorkshire’s economy, thanks to a European-funded scheme led by the University of Huddersfield. The Graduate Entrepreneurship Project was created through an award of £1.3 million from the European Regional Development Fund, via the agency Yorkshire Forward. People with bright business ideas who graduated from one of Yorkshire’s universities will be able to apply for practical help and funding.
Enterprise Education has a massive impact on young people I have worked with and continue to work with. Although it can’t be measured in GCSE grade terms it provides students with opportunities and many cases self belief. I would like to share 2 examples, one entrepreneurial and the other employ-ability. One student who I taught undertook the Young Enterprise company programme. I will never forget the presentation at the regional finals! Also this student holding his own as the Managing Director of Barclays quizzed him about their product. He excelled at his role as managing director developing confidence and leadership skills. He completed college and is now working for one of the major banks. The impact of enterprise education for this students in the employability and skills that the exposure of enterprise gave him to become a more enterprising person. The second example is a student I taught Business Studies. Again involved in the Young Enterprise company programme. This student has now started his own business http://www.xuro.co.uk Enterprise Education provided a platform for this student to develop an idea and give him the confidence to start his own business. Two completely different examples both I’ll hope you’ll agree enterprising with different outcome.
Thanks for that Steve!
