On Exams – Success and Failure

On Exams – Success and Failure

Right, well that was a busy few weeks, but I’m back… expect a few more personal blogs over the next couple weeks focusing on some personal challenges I’m going through; but before that I thought I would write this quick piece for all those who have got exam results recently.

At 26 I completed my GCSE’s ten years ago now…wow that’s been a while… I did great in my GCSE’s and came in top 10 in my class so got into sixth form, where 2 years later I flunked…massively… I didn’t even get near my predicted grades… I missed my first choice and instead chose to go to a local University to study. For me there were many reasons for this, but mainly I just wasn’t an A-level guy; I enjoyed the subjects but didn’t suit the exams… I proved that 3 years later by getting a degree with 1st Class Honours! (Avoiding many exams along the way)… so anyway where is this little story going you might ask?

Well this is just me saying I have been on both sides of this great success and great failure and the moral of my story is don’t worry… we don’t all suit the same ways of teaching or learning… no matter what your results have been take some time to reflect on them:

Ask yourself; what did you learn? What did you enjoy or do well in? Could these give you a new direction? Or do they at least show you what you’re not interested in?

By asking these simple questions you can turn even the worst exam situation into a basis for new opportunity and I should know, I did… and if you’re worried about University or the Job market here’s a tip… stop waiting for the old routes, go out there and help yourself by starting something of your own…trust me the University at least will still be there when you get back, and employers will look on someone who took a chance far more favourably than someone who didn’t

Oh and if you want any help getting there, just drop me a comment.

Peace
Matt
